In life, people find their purpose here on this earth. They find what they are meant to do in life or in our generation. They find their talent. In other words, I feel that my talent is my voice. I feel like I am meant to do something with it because God had placed this particular thing in my life and so that I can lead or help others or be who I am and express myself through the music and have it be something that I enjoy doing and I am blessed with a voice.
I feel that my voice is my talent and that it is something that I am good at. My voice is where I feel like I can do something and I feel like I am apart of and can accomplish things in and could go far with. God had placed that in me for a reason. One experience that I have had was when my church had this talent show thing called teen talent. I remembered that I really wanted to sing a song, but was to scared to go on stage because I have never done anything like that before. Mostly in the shower or alone in my room and when no one is around. That day I faced my fear and signed up last minute with no song picked out no soundtrack or anything but myself. So I decided to sing a worship song that I have known all of my life, “I Could Sing Of Your Love”, acapella. They call my name for me to go up and I took a deep breath and started to sing with my eyes closed. I was so nervous, but I did it and I didn’t mess up. At the end of the show they announced the first second and third place winners of the female vocal category and I got first place. First place winners get to go to the next round.
So here I am at the next round with a song called, “ Never Alone”, by the Barlow Girls and soundtrack prepared for this show. My name gets called up and on stage I go. Waiting for the soundtrack to play, I feel my legs shake and my heart in my throat. The song played and I started to sing. When the song was over I heard the crowd clapping and cheering and my mom in the first row crying and standing and cheering me on. In that moment I knew that this is what I have been called to do and this is what I am meant to do. I have never seen my mom cry and seen a look on her face of being so proud. It made me cry. Off the stage I went and came out the room to go with the audience and she was the first person to come and hug me, then my dad and friends who came to support me along with my church. They announced the category for the female voice soloists, “And The Award Of Excellence Goes to… Jasmine Dekker”, I was in shock and everyone around me was standing up screaming and pulling me toward the stage to get the award. I got on stage and I started to cry so hard. To have a life time experience like that was just so breathtaking and a God given blessing. I have never been so proud of myself. There was a next round in texas but we couldn’t afford the trip, but I was still very blessed and so thankful for such an amazing experience.
This event has such a big influence of how it shaped my life today by not only helping me grow in my faith, but also because it has shown me apart of what I can do and what my purpose is here. This experience is really calling me to continue this gift that God has blessed me with. I feel that God had called me to lead others with my voice such as making worship music. Not only will I be worshiping and honoring my father and Jesus, but I am also leading others to do the same and with that, it would mean the world to me to help others and lead them on a good path with Jesus and our Father in heaven.
I really enjoy worship music along with my other favorites genres of music. At my church I have a youth group there where we lead worship and I am really working to be one of the worship leaders because it’s just a beautiful thing to see people who reach out to Jesus for help and surrender to God or just sing along to the music with their hands up and eyes closed. The most amazing thing to see is when a friend or a person comes and they don’t know God and they start coming every week and they eventually give their hearts to Jesus and fall deeply in love with our father and Jesus. This is the kind of stuff that has led me to be the kind of person I am today. Not perfect and I may stumble and fall sometimes, and I may fear what my future holds, but I know who holds my future.
